โข Local infection of the distal fingertip, occurring in the pulp.
โข History: Penetrating injury, splint, and paronychia.
โข Findings: Pain, erythema, swelling, and abscess (Fig. 32-17).
โข Distribution: Thumb and index finger.
โข Complications: Osteitis, osteomyelitis of distal phalanx, joint with septic arthritis; extension into distal end of flexor tendon sheath, and producing tenosynovitis.
โข Course: May be rapid and severe.
